I hate to say it. I hope I don’t sound ridiculous but Planet Fitness has been one of the worst gyms I have ever been to in my entire life of living.

I may not be a bodybuilder or personal trainer but I do consider myself someone who lives an active lifestyle. I have been active since I was a kid. I would dance with my cousins, I played recreational basketball at the local park all throughout elementary school, and I was a cheerleader in middle school. When I got to college, I was on one of the dance teams so that helped me to remain active. However, I still managed to go to our campus rec center (gym) one to two times a day to stay fit.

I absolutely love working out but not necessarily a big fan of going to the gym. I wrestle with gym anxiety so it takes a lot of work to actually get me in the gym. However, once I have my game plan, I grab my headphones and make my way to the nearest gym. In this case, that gym WAS Planet Fitness.

Let me start by saying, I have tried out several different gyms LAFitness, Shapes, Bailey’s Total Fitness, US1 Fitness, 24HrFitness, CRUNCH, YouFit, USF CampusRec, you name it. YouFit was the most recent gym that I went to. I loved YouFit to be honest but I lost my job and could no longer afford it. I had a plan that allows you to go to different locations and because I would travel often, I needed something you could use anywhere. So that $23 and some change was a sacrifice I could no longer make since the money I did have needed to go to my necessities – not wants.

Anywho, a couple months went by since I lost my job and subsequently, I met this guy who allowed me to go to the gym with him. His gym was great too (US1 Fitness) but I had to start the whole process again of getting comfortable with the gym and that was difficult because we were not going at consistent days/times and consistency helps with me overcoming anxiety. When he broke things off with me, my friend hit me up asking if I wanted to partner with her in this new 12-week fitness plan she purchased. My first response was…

Then I asked if I needed a gym to do the workouts and she said yes. So I asked my dad if he was willing to sponsor me $10 to go to the local Planet Fitness to start this fitness plan and then give me the $10/month to pay for the membership until I can secure a legit job. He was down for it. I honestly don’t know how I would have survived these last five months on unemployment without my dad but that’s a story for another time.

Now, I know a lot of fitness enthusiasts and NONE — ABSOLUTELY NONE — of them go to Planet Fitness and my first trip there showed me why. As soon as I walked in, I noticed they didn’t have barbells. They only have the EZ Barbells and the Smith Machines. So I was forced to use those instead and because there aren’t many, I would often opt-out of using them entirely which made it difficult to complete the fitness plan in its’ entirety. Then, I realized that though it may be spacious — the location I went to had two floors — it did not have adequate machines. When I workout, I try to do things that don’t require the use of machines but sometimes it does. Since I was following a fitness plan, about 10%-25% of what I needed to do each day required the use of some type of machine that Planet Fitness either did not offer, did not have enough of so I refused to wait, or was positioned poorly so I could not manipulate the machine the way I wanted to.

I have never been to a gym so piss-poor and I want to give it a 1, maybe 2 star out of 5 rating. It does have a sufficient amount of treadmills if you’re interested in doing cardio all day and it has the basic necessities if you just want to stay active but not do too much. This gym is perfect for people with fitness gear that wants to take pics in front of the mirror like they are actually putting in work, aside from that, find a real gym.
