I Created My Own Online School

OMFG! I can’t believe I did it. I actually created my own online school. I’m so proud of myself.

Let’s rewind right quick to see how I even got here.

It all started Sunday, August 19, 1990, when my mom went into labor at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. WAIT!!! I think I went too far back. Doing the most per usual lol.

It actually started in 2015 – my first year as an educator. I was teaching second grade and I was all over the place but I learned a lot. The next three years, I was teaching high school social studies – yes, grades 9-12 – and I learned real quick that I love this student population — not necessarily the subject.

In June 2019, my teaching certification expired and I found myself on an involuntary sabbatical with poor attempts to renew that certification. Still passionate about teaching, I knew that when my prospective clients asked if I could teach them what I know about social media management since they couldn’t afford my monthly services, there was a market for me to make passive income sharing what I know.

So in December 2019 or maybe January 2020, I honestly can’t remember with this quarantine-brain, I started researching how to make this happen and by this, I mean – how to make courses I can sell online. I saw what people were doing on social media and I researched everything from how to physically create the course (powerpoint & screen record) to what platform is best to host the course (teachable, thinkific, etc).

Y’all should know by now that I think big – so big that I almost feel like I’m crazy, so big that I feel like I’m reaching, so big that I sometimes psych myself out of doing what I thought I could do. So to get a grip, I decided to just focus on creating a course that had the fundamentals for social media management – what I like to call: The 5 Pillars of Social Media Management [Content Creation, Hashtag Development, Post Scheduling & Automation, Engagement, and Marketing & Advertising].

I felt like this course would be perfect for small business owners, start-up business owners, and new social media managers that wanted a foundational understanding of how to manage their social media. The goal is for you to take this course, learn how to manage social media accounts (specifically Instagram), and then apply what you learned to your own business social media until life gets too hectic and now you have to outsource. I’m a big advocate for self-sufficiency. I want to teach you how to fish so you can feed yourself everyday.

Usually, when starting a business, you don’t have the funds to invest in something like monthly social media management services but you may have it in your budget to invest in a course that teaches you everything you need to know to start your journey.

So, I created the course, uploaded it to the Teachable platform, jazzed up the site, came up with my price, created a launch strategy, created a sales goal, and then I was like, I’m thinking too small. I know, WTF IS THINKING TOO SMALL LOLA???

I felt like, what if a business owner or social media manager has already mastered one of the five pillars, they may not want to invest in the whole course. Then I decided to split that premiere course into mini courses where each pillar is its own course. Doing that allowed me to offer more courses which gave opportunity for more streams of passive income.

And then, it hit me. I was still thinking too small. I have more courses in my head. I have more courses in my heart. I actually have a whole ass school. A WHOLE ASS SCHOOL!!! I can offer way more than those courses. So I started writing. I started writing all the other topics I could teach like, how to build your own school in Teachable lol. The opportunities are endless.

The moral of this whole story is

  • There’s no such thing as thinking too big. If anything, we have been programmed to think too small.
  • If your vision seems too big, too crazy, too unattainable – it’s just right! There’s a reason YOU have that vision. Execute it.
  • The opportunities in life and in creativity are endless. Maximize it.

I honestly can’t express how proud I am to have launched my own school with 5 courses available now for you to enjoy. Check out LOLA MGMT UNIVERSITY today.

In the wise words of Mr. Henry Ford,

Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!

Yours Truly,
